Where to Park an RV Overnight

There are two main places to park your RV overnight: campgrounds and businesses. Read on to learn about the advantages of each!

Parking at Campgrounds

Benefits of Overnight RV Parking at Campgrounds

Obviously, the best option when it comes to parking an RV is to head to a campground or state park where camping facilities already exist. Water, sewer and power hook-ups are widely available at these sites, along with pre-established RV-sized parking spaces. Fees are often quite reasonable and the campgrounds are made to be clean and secure with amenities for your usage.

What You’ll Need to Do

You will need to book your stay well in advance for many of these campgrounds, especially during the spring and summer, and you may not be able to utilize a campground or state park if you’re arriving at the last minute.

Parking at Businesses

Benefits of Overnight RV Parking at Businesses

You’ve undoubtedly noticed that many big-box stores like Walmart, Cabela’s, Target and big chain grocery stores have enormous parking lots with tons of space. These lots see little usage at night when the stores are shuttered, except for night cleaning staff. Fortunately, many of these businesses are RV-friendly and are willing to let you park on their lots overnight.

What You’ll Need to Do

Be mindful of busy seasons like during the holidays, when many shoppers may be coming in for special late-night deals.

You’ll also want to watch for “no overnight parking” signs in the lot, or signs that indicate a parking time limit of thirty minutes or two hours.

If you are in doubt and you need a place to park, look up the store’s phone number and call the manager to ask if you may park there.
